Did you know the majority of home break-ins occur during the summer months?
Today’s blog will focus on statistics around home invasions and tips to keep your home safe!

In Canada, there is a home break-in or burglary every 90 seconds. The majority of home invasions occur during the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM.
Here’s how intruders are typically getting in:
25% of home break-ins are due to the opportunity of a home being left unlocked
34% enter through the front door
23% enter through a first-floor window
22% enter through the back door
What’s surprising is that only 12% of home break-ins are planned.
Statistics tell us that the majority of homes that are broken into appear vacant due to things like:
Overgrown grass and gardens
Deliveries left outside
Evening lights left on during the day
Any sign that gives the impression no one has been home or is currently home
Here Are Some of My Tips to Stay Off the Radar:
Program your lights or use a timer
Install a two-way doorbell you can speak through … great for interacting with delivery people or deterring visitors
Use a bench or delivery box where packages can be placed out of view
Ask a neighbour, friend, or family member to help maintain your home’s appearance: cut the grass, take out/bring in the garbage, or park a car in your driveway
Use motion-sensor lights around the exterior
In the winter months, ask someone to shovel your driveway and walkways undisturbed snow with no tire tracks or footprints is an easy giveaway that no one is homE
My #1 Recommendation:
A monitored home alarm system with cameras at each entry point including views of your cars in the driveway.
You can purchase a non-monitored system, but that means you need to be available to respond to a notification in real-time.
✅ Be sure to ask your provider if they offer discounts based on your employer
✅ Don’t forget to update your home insurance policy you may be eligible for a discount!
